Why This Road Trip

Big Sur is one of those rare places that lives up to every photo you have seen of it. In just 190 kilometers between Monterey and San Simeon, you pass through some of the most dramatic coastal scenery on the planet. Sheer granite cliffs plunge hundreds of feet into the Pacific while ancient redwoods tower overhead.

What makes this route perfect for a weekend is the density of world-class stops in a short distance. You can linger at Carmel's art galleries, stand on the edge of Bixby Bridge, watch a waterfall pour onto a pristine beach at McWay Falls, and tour the extravagant Hearst Castle. All without driving more than 3 hours total.

Unlike longer California coast trips, this route does not require vacation days. Leave Friday evening, spend Saturday and Sunday exploring, and return home with a full memory card and none of the road-trip fatigue. It is the highest scenic-value-per-mile weekend drive in the United States.

Safety Tips & Local Knowledge

Big Sur is remote and beautiful. A little preparation goes a long way.

⚠️

Highway 1 through Big Sur has narrow two-lane roads with steep drop-offs and no guardrails in places. Drive slowly and use pullouts to let faster traffic pass.

⚠️

Cell service is nonexistent through most of Big Sur. Download offline maps and let someone know your plans before departing Monterey.

⚠️

Coastal fog is common June through August mornings. Visibility can drop to near zero. Keep headlights on and drive at reduced speed.

⚠️

Gas stations are rare between Carmel and San Simeon. Fill your tank in Monterey. Big Sur has one station at Ragged Point with premium-only fuel at elevated prices.

⚠️

Landslides and rockfalls can close Highway 1 with little notice. Check Caltrans road conditions (quickmap.dot.ca.gov) the morning of your drive.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before hitting the road.

Is Big Sur suitable for a weekend trip?

Absolutely. The 190 km route from Monterey to San Simeon is perfectly paced for 2 days with plenty of time at each stop. You will not feel rushed if you leave Monterey by 9 AM on day one.

Can I drive an RV through Big Sur?

It is not recommended. Highway 1 through Big Sur has extremely narrow stretches, tight hairpin turns, and limited pullouts. Large vehicles (over 24 feet) may struggle, and some sections have posted size restrictions. A sedan or SUV is ideal.

When is the best time to visit Big Sur?

September and October offer the warmest weather, clearest skies, and fewer crowds. Spring (April-May) brings wildflowers and green hillsides. Summer has the most visitors and morning fog. Winter offers dramatic waves and whale watching but carries a risk of road closures from storms.

Do I need reservations for Hearst Castle?

Yes. Hearst Castle tours are reservation-only and sell out weeks in advance during summer and holiday weekends. Book through the California State Parks reservation system at hearstcastle.org. The Grand Rooms Tour is the best option for first-time visitors.

Is there cell phone service in Big Sur?

Very limited. You will lose signal shortly after leaving Carmel and will not reliably regain it until near San Simeon. Download offline maps, queue up music playlists, and let someone know your plans before heading into the area.
