Why This Road Trip

The Canyon to Canyon route from Grand Canyon to Zion is one of the most geologically spectacular road trips on the planet. In just 480 kilometers, you pass through landscapes that span nearly two billion years of Earth's history, from the ancient Vishnu Schist at the bottom of the Grand Canyon to the Navajo Sandstone towers of Zion.

This route connects four national parks and two of the most photographed natural formations in the American Southwest: Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon. Each day delivers a completely different type of canyon scenery. The Grand Canyon's mile-deep layered abyss. The Colorado River's perfect meander at Horseshoe Bend. The otherworldly light beams inside Antelope Canyon. The alien hoodoo forests of Bryce. The soaring 2,000-foot sandstone walls of Zion.

What makes this route uniquely rewarding is the concentration of world-class natural wonders per driving hour. With only 6 hours of total driving across 4 days, you spend far more time hiking, exploring, and photographing than sitting behind the wheel. This is a trip where every single stop is a bucket-list destination.

Grand Canyon South Rim

Minimal driving·Within park
Overnight
Grand Canyon Village
$120-$350/night

Mather Point Sunrise

Scenic Viewpoint · 45 min

Arrive 30 minutes before sunrise. This is the most accessible sunrise viewpoint on the South Rim and the views are absolutely staggering at first light.

Rim Trail

Hiking · 2-3 hours

Walk the paved section between Mather Point and Bright Angel Lodge (4.5 km). Relatively flat with nonstop canyon views. Best photography in morning light.

Desert View Watchtower

Historic Landmark · 1 hour

A 70-foot stone watchtower designed by Mary Colter in 1932. Climb to the top for 360-degree panoramas. The interior murals by Hopi artist Fred Kabotie are remarkable.

Bright Angel Trail (Partial)

Hiking · 2-3 hours

Hike to the 1.5-Mile Resthouse for a taste of below-rim hiking. Steep switchbacks with stunning views. Do not attempt to hike to the river and back in one day.

Hopi Point Sunset

Scenic Viewpoint · 1 hour

Take the free Hermit Road shuttle (March through November) to Hopi Point. Wide western exposure makes this the best sunset spot on the South Rim. Arrive 45 minutes early for a good position.

Where to Eat

El Tovar Dining Room is the finest restaurant on the rim. Book dinner reservations months in advance. Arizona Room is the solid backup with canyon views.

Safety Tips & Local Knowledge

Desert canyon country demands respect. These tips could save your trip or your life.

⚠️

Summer temperatures at the Grand Canyon and Page regularly exceed 110F (43C). Hike before 10 AM and after 4 PM. Heat exhaustion is the number one cause of rescue calls in the park.

⚠️

Bryce Canyon sits at 7,000 to 9,000 feet elevation. Altitude sickness can affect anyone. Take it easy on your first hike and stay hydrated.

⚠️

Bring at least 1 gallon (4 liters) of water per person per day for hiking. Desert air is extremely dry and dehydration happens faster than you expect.

⚠️

Flash floods are a serious danger in slot canyons including Antelope Canyon. Tours will be cancelled if there is any rain in the forecast. Do not enter any slot canyon without a guide.

⚠️

Antelope Canyon is on Navajo Nation land and requires a Navajo-guided tour. Book at least 2-3 weeks in advance during peak season. Walk-ups are rarely available.

⚠️

Cell service is limited between Cameron and Page, and spotty throughout Bryce Canyon. Download offline maps before leaving the Grand Canyon.

Best Time to Go

Best
April-May: Comfortable temperatures at all elevations. Wildflowers in Zion. Manageable crowds. Clear skies for photography.
Best
September-October: Heat has broken. Fall colors begin in Zion. Thinner crowds than summer. Perfect hiking weather.
Caution
June-August: Extreme heat at Grand Canyon and Page (110F+). Monsoon thunderstorms bring flash flood risk. Early morning hiking only.
Fair
November-March: Cold at Bryce (below freezing). Some roads may close for snow. But fewer crowds and dramatic winter canyon scenery.

Preparation

What to Pack

1 gallon water container per person
Desert hiking demands serious hydration. Refill at every opportunity. Water is scarce between stops.
Sun protection kit
Wide-brim hat, SPF 50+ sunscreen, UV sunglasses. Desert sun at elevation is brutal and burns happen fast.
Layers for elevation changes
Temperatures can swing 30+ degrees between the canyon floor and Bryce Canyon rim. Mornings at 8,000 feet can be near freezing even in summer.
Sturdy hiking shoes
Bright Angel Trail, Navajo Loop, and Canyon Overlook Trail have rocky and uneven surfaces. Sandals will not cut it.
Camera with wide-angle lens
Canyon panoramas, Horseshoe Bend, and Antelope Canyon light beams all demand wide-angle. A tripod helps in the dim slot canyons.
Headlamp or flashlight
Sunrise hikes at Bryce start in darkness. Some sections of Navajo Loop Trail are deeply shaded. Essential for pre-dawn trailheads.
