Why Florida for Road Trips

Florida is the only state in the continental US where you can drive across open ocean. The Overseas Highway from Miami to Key West is a 160-mile chain of 42 bridges connecting tropical islands, and it feels more like the Caribbean than America. That alone puts Florida on the road trip map, but the state delivers far more than just the Keys.

With 1,350 miles of coastline - more than any state except Alaska - Florida offers an almost absurd variety of beach driving. The Atlantic side delivers surf breaks and historic towns. The Gulf side delivers powder-white sand, calm turquoise water, and sunsets that look Photoshopped. In between, the Everglades offers a wilderness experience that exists nowhere else on Earth.

The practical advantages are significant. Florida has no state income tax, no vehicle inspection requirements, and year-round warm weather. You can road trip Florida in January while the rest of the country is buried in snow. The food - particularly the seafood, Cuban cuisine in Miami, and the stone crab claws - elevates every stop from a pit stop to a destination.

Best Time to Visit Florida

Best
Winter (Dec-Feb)

Dry season with comfortable temperatures (65-80°F). Peak tourist season and highest prices, but the weather is nearly perfect. Best time for the Keys, Everglades, and manatee encounters.

Great
Spring (Mar-May)

Warming up but still mostly dry. Spring break crowds in March. Sea turtle nesting begins in May. Prices drop after Easter.

Mixed
Summer (Jun-Aug)

Hot, humid, and the start of hurricane season. Daily afternoon thunderstorms. But beaches are warm, crowds thin, and prices are at their lowest. Lightning capital of the US.

Good
Fall (Sep-Nov)

Peak hurricane season through October. November is excellent - heat breaks, crowds are minimal, and prices are low. The Everglades dry season begins in November.

Florida Road Trip Tips

What the travel blogs skip about driving in the Sunshine State.

Hurricane Season

June 1 through November 30. Peak risk is August-October. Monitor NOAA forecasts if traveling during this period. The Keys can be evacuated with just 24-48 hours notice.

Toll Roads

Florida loves toll roads. SunPass is the electronic system - get one or use a rental car's built-in toll transponder. The Florida Turnpike, most expressways in Orlando and Miami, and several bridges are tolled.

Speed Traps

Small towns on US highways are notorious for speed traps. Waldo (between Jacksonville and Gainesville) and Lawtey are the most famous. Slow down when the speed limit drops.

Gas Prices

Generally near the national average. Prices jump in the Keys - fill up in Homestead (last mainland city before the Overseas Highway). Gas is cheapest along I-95 and I-75 corridors.

Afternoon Storms

Summer thunderstorms hit like clockwork between 2-5 PM. They're intense but usually pass in 30-60 minutes. Pull over if visibility drops - Florida rain can be blinding.

Wildlife on Roads

Florida has more roadkill than almost any state. Watch for deer at dawn/dusk, alligators near water crossings, and the endangered Florida panther in the Everglades corridor. The Big Cypress area has wildlife underpasses - they work.

Sunscreen

Florida's UV index is the highest in the continental US. You will burn faster than you think, even on cloudy days. Reef-safe sunscreen is recommended, especially in the Keys near coral reefs.

Right Turn on Red

Legal statewide unless posted otherwise. Florida also allows U-turns at most intersections unless a sign prohibits it - unusual compared to most states.

Highlights

Top Stops in Florida

The stops that turn a drive into an adventure.

Island City

Key West

The southernmost point in the continental US. Hemingway's house, Duval Street, and sunsets at Mallory Square that draw applause from crowds every single evening.

National Park

Everglades National Park

The largest subtropical wilderness in the US. Airboat tours, the Anhinga Trail for guaranteed wildlife sightings, and a million-year-old ecosystem you can't see anywhere else.

Historic City

St. Augustine

Founded in 1565, it's the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in the US. Castillo de San Marcos, the Lightner Museum, and St. George Street's restaurants.

National Park

Dry Tortugas

A 70-mile ferry ride from Key West to Fort Jefferson, a massive Civil War-era fort surrounded by crystal-clear water. Some of the best snorkeling in the US.

Sanibel Island

World-famous shelling beaches. The J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge is home to over 200 bird species. The Sanibel Stoop - the shelling posture - is a real thing.

The crown jewel of the Overseas Highway. Seven miles of road suspended over open ocean connecting the Middle Keys to the Lower Keys. Stop at the old bridge for photos.

Natural Spring
