Why Nevada for a Road Trip

Nevada is the most open state in the Lower 48 - vast stretches of desert basin and range where you can drive for an hour without seeing another car. But that emptiness is the point. From Las Vegas as your base, you can reach Death Valley's alien landscapes, Valley of Fire's blazing red sandstone, and the infamous Extraterrestrial Highway in a single tank of gas. Nevada's loneliest roads are its most memorable.

The genius of Nevada road trips is Las Vegas as a base camp. Cheap flights from everywhere, affordable midweek hotels, rental cars at every price point, and within a 2-hour radius: Death Valley, Valley of Fire, Red Rock Canyon, Hoover Dam, Zion National Park, and the Grand Canyon. No other city in America provides this kind of access to this many top-tier natural destinations.

Beyond the Vegas radius, Nevada's Highway 50 - officially the "Loneliest Road in America" - and the Extraterrestrial Highway offer the kind of driving experience that barely exists anymore: empty, straight, hypnotic desert roads under impossibly big skies. Nevada is 86% public land, giving it a wildness that most states have long since lost.

Death Valley from Las Vegas

280 km (174 miles one way)·2 - 3 days·Best: November - March·Moderate
View Route

The hottest, driest, lowest place in North America - and one of the most visually remarkable. From Las Vegas, you can reach Death Valley in 2 hours. Badwater Basin is 282 feet below sea level, Zabriskie Point looks like Mars, and the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes at sunrise are otherworldly. Visit October through March to avoid lethal heat.

Valley of Fire State Park

View Route

Nevada's oldest and largest state park, just an hour from the Las Vegas Strip. Blazing red Aztec sandstone formations that are 150 million years old. The Fire Wave Trail is one of the most photogenic short hikes in the Southwest, and the White Domes loop passes through a narrow slot canyon. Arrive at sunrise for the best light.

Extraterrestrial Highway

160 km (98 miles)·1 - 2 days·Best: March - May, September - November·Easy
View Route

State Route 375 through the Nevada desert past the perimeter of Area 51. The tiny town of Rachel (population ~54) is home to the Little A'Le'Inn, the only business on the highway. The road is dead straight through empty basin desert with the Groom Lake restricted area to the south. Surreal, eerie, and genuinely one-of-a-kind.

430 km (267 miles round)·3 - 4 days·Best: March - May, September - November·Easy - Moderate
View Route

Las Vegas is the perfect base for reaching Utah's iconic national parks. Zion is just 2.5 hours away, and Bryce Canyon is another 1.5 hours beyond. Good to Know

Nevada Road Trip Tips

Desert survival essentials and Vegas-based logistics.

⚠️

Death Valley can exceed 130°F in summer. Visiting June through August is genuinely dangerous. Carry extra water and a full tank of gas.

⚠️

Gas stations are extremely sparse on the Extraterrestrial Highway. Fill up in Tonopah or Alamo. Carry extra fuel for safety.

⚠️

Valley of Fire has no gas, food, or water inside the park. Bring everything you need. The visitor center has restrooms only.

⚠️

Las Vegas hotel rooms are cheapest midweek (Tuesday-Thursday). Use Vegas as a base and do day trips to Valley of Fire and Red Rock Canyon.

⚠️

Cell service is nonexistent on most Nevada highways outside of Las Vegas. Download offline maps for the Extraterrestrial Highway.

⚠️

Nevada allows open container for passengers (not drivers) in vehicles. But the real danger is the empty highways - do not speed through wildlife areas at night.
